NSF acts to justify the grants it funds

The National Science Foundation has announced an initiative to increase transparency and accountability in the agency’s grant-making decisions.

Through the program, launched in mid-November, each directorate at the NSF will develop several broad portfolios to address the mission of the agency. To receive funding from the agency, grant proposals will have to fit into one or more of these portfolios.

“Programs will need to demonstrate that the grants they fund fall within one or more portfolios of the directorate, and the directorate will ensure that the portfolios apply specifically to the NSF mission,” explained the American Society of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology in a blog post on 25 November.
