NSF teams up with Intel, GE for $10m education program

The National Science Foundation has launched a public-private partnership, Graduate 10K+, that aims to increase the number of students graduating each year with degrees in computer science and engineering by 10,000.

According to NSF statistics, 39,000 students earned Bachelors degrees in computer science in the US in 2008, while 69,000 earned Bachelors degrees in engineering that year.

Through the initiative, the NSF is making a total of $10 million available to nine institutions. The funds will support projects that encourage undergraduates enrolled in computer science and engineering programs to complete them. At present, many US college students quit science, technology and mathematics programs during within the first two years.
