HHS releases health data for research

The department of Health and Human Services (HHS) released a huge swathe of data about outpatient charges and medicare spending on 3 June, to help researchers and entrepreneurs develop new tools to study and improve health care in the US.

“A more data-driven and transparent health care marketplace can help consumers and their families make important decisions about their care,” said Kathleen Sebelius, secretary of health, in a press release. “The administration is committed to making the health system more transparent and harnessing data to empower consumers.”

The data includes estimates of average charges for 30 types of hospital outpatient procedures, such as clinic visits, echocardiograms, and endoscopies, as well as county-level information on medicare spending and utilization, and medicare beneficiaries with chronic conditions.
