US National Academies take on gun lobby with report on research priorities

Two US federal agencies—the Institute of Medicine and the National Research Council—have identified high-priority areas for research into gun violence, which has been traditionally restricted.

The five areas identified are: the characteristics of gun violence; risk and protective factors; prevention and other interventions; gun safety technology; and the influence of video games and other media.

Senator John Rockefeller, a Democrat from West Virginia, who has been pushing for more research on the causes of gun violence, especially on the links to violent movies and video games, welcomed the report. “We should take the IOM proposal seriously and make sure the research into causes of gun violence can begin in earnest. I have always believed that the cornerstone of good public policy is strong facts rooted in objective evaluation,” he said in a statement.
