Darpa opens biotech office

The Pentagon’s Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (Darpa) has opened a biological technologies office that will merge biology, engineering, and computer science, the agency has said.

Darpa’s mission is to stay ahead of the shifting technology curve by making early investments in revolutionary areas that cut across fields of research, the agency said in an announcement on 1 April. The Biological Technologies Office (BTO) will explore the intersection of biology and the physical sciences, it said.

“The Biological Technologies Office will advance and expand on a number of earlier Darpa programs that made preliminary inroads into the bio-technological frontier,” said Geoff Ling, who has been named the office’s first director.
