Harold Varmus to retire

The director of the National Cancer Institute has announced he will retire at the end of March.

Deputy director Douglas Lowy will take over as acting director on 1 April, the agency said.

Varmus, a virologist, has served as director since 2010. He plans to join the faculty of the Weill-Cornell Medical College after his retirement. Varmus also served as the director of the National Institutes of Health, of which the institute is part, in the 1990s under President Clinton. In 1989, he shared a Nobel prize for his work on the genetic origins of some cancers.
