NIH appoints director of children’s institute

Geneticist Diana Bianchi has been named as the next director of the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development at the National Institutes of Health.

Bianchi is a professor of pediatrics, obstetrics and gynecology at Tufts University in Boston. Her research focuses on non-invasive prenatal genetic testing, which involves sampling a mother’s blood for fetal genetic information. She previously served on the NICHD’s advisory council for four years.

Her predecessor, Alan Guttmacher, retired in September 2015 after almost six years directing NICHD. His deputy, Catherine Spong, has served as acting director over the past year.
