A conservative talk-radio host and failed Senate candidate has been chosen to oversee the US Department of Agriculture’s research section, according to media reports.
These state that President Donald Trump has approached Sam Clovis to be the USDA’s undersecretary for research, education and economics, often called the department’s chief scientist. The position is typically filled by a scientist with agriculture experience. Catherine Woteki, who served under former president Barack Obama, has a PhD in nutrition science and was a dean at Iowa State University before taking the job.
The job involves overseeing USDA’s internal research service and the office that awards extramural research grants. Its purview also covers the economic research service and the farm statistics service.
