The Department of Energy's Office of Fossil Energy has launched a call for two pilot projects to improve the performance of coal-powered systems.
The $50-million of funding will be used to design, construct, and operate two large-scale pilot projects for “transformational coal technologies” that will improve efficiency, emissions and cost, the DOE said on 24 August.
The department has been investing in a range of potential technologies and now wants to move the most promising ones on to large-scale pilot testing. Applicants should have demonstrated success on a smaller scale, and will require 20 per cent cost-sharing on the project.
