NIH agrees to tighten checks against ‘foreign threats’

Government inspectors found multiple problems with vetting processes at the National Institutes of Health

The National Institutes of Health, the United States’ national biomedical research funder, has agreed to change its grant assessments to prevent “foreign threats to research integrity”, in response to government inspections of its vetting procedures.

Inspectors-general from the Department of Health and Human Services published a trio of reports on 25 September criticising the NIH’s practices for checking financial conflicts of interest, vetting peer reviewers and reporting institutional funding.
