US biomedical research funder sets out “high hopes” in five-year strategic plan

The US National Institutes of Health, a federal agency that funds almost 50,000 biomedical grants at any given time, has updated its list of “bold predictions” for the fields within its remit as part of a new strategic plan for the next five years.

Among the 35 predictions in the NIH plan published on 30 July is a forecast that “insight will be gained into the ultimate ability to regenerate human limbs, using emerging technologies to activate the body’s own growth pathways and processes”.
