Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory achieves “scientific energy breakeven”

US scientists competing in the race to harness nuclear fusion as an energy source announced a huge breakthrough earlier this week.

In a statement on Tuesday 13 December, the US Department of Energy confirmed researchers had successfully achieved “scientific energy breakeven”, producing more energy from a fusion experiment than was put in.
