NIH seeks views on greater oversight of cephalopod research

   

National Institutes of Health acknowledges that aquatic invertebrates, including octopuses, seem able to feel pain

The US National Institutes of Health is seeking views on proposed guidance to minimise the discomfort, distress and pain inflicted on cephalopods when the animals are used in research.

Under the medical research agency’s proposal, oversight bodies could be required to review the use of the aquatic invertebrates at institutes carrying out NIH-funded projects.
