Republicans back research—except embryonic stem cells

The Republican Party has emphasised its support for research in a range of sectors from cyber-security to coal but has also drawn a hard line against work involving embryonic stem cells.

The party’s platform, released on 29 August to coincide with the party’s national convention in Florida, emphasises the importance of investing in research to develop “cutting-edge cyber security technologies” and says that the energy sector needs greater a focus on research and development to diversify domestic energy sources.
