NRC endorses underground science lab proposal

The independent National Research Council (NRC) is backing a government effort to build a large Deep Underground Science and Engineering Laboratory (DUSEL) to enable high-level physics experiments in an abandoned mine in Lead, South Dakota.

In a July 12 report, an NRC committee concluded that the proposed lab would be of long-term benefit to the physics community and beyond, and would guarantee a US leadership role in the expanding global field of underground science generally and in particle physics particularly.
