The federal government needs to develop a national initiative to steer research and development funding in optics and photonics, according to a report released by the National Academies on 13 August.
The report, ‘Optics and Photonics: Essential Technologies for our Nation’, identifies research priorities and challenges to fill gaps in the field, which has produced developments ranging from smart phone displays to medical diagnostic tools.
