Glycoscience could be next research boom area

A new focus amongst funding agencies on glycoscience—which explores the structures and functions of sugars—could lead to widespread advances in medicine, energy, and materials, according to a National Research Council report.

The report, ‘Transforming Glycoscience: A Roadmap for the Future’, published on 16 August, says glycoscience promises great advances but has received little attention from researchers because of a lack of tools to probe the often complex structures and properties.
