Kavli Foundation’s founder and chairman dies

Fred Kavli, the founder and chairman of the science funding foundation that bears his name, passed away on 21 November as a result of complications due to surgery following a cancer diagnosis that he received about a year ago.

Kavli, a Norwegian-born physicist, was a prominent Californian business leader and noted philanthropist. He was 86 years old.

The foundation, set up by Kavli in December 2000, works to establish research institutes at leading universities and institutions in the US, Europe and Asia. It also awards professorships, and has launched a series of science prizes to recognize scientists for their seminal advances in astrophysics, nanoscience and neuroscience.
