Representative Rush Holt, a Democrat from New Jersey, will take over as the American Association for the Advancement of Science’s next chief executive when he retires at the end of 2014, after 16 years in office.
Holt, a physicist, will succeed Alan Leshner, who has been the head of the AAAS since 2001.
He takes over the AAAS as it implements a long-term strategic plan intended to create a larger lobbying presence on Capitol Hill, provide more resources for members and improve the digital presence of its journals, including Science. While the organization has seen declining membership revenue over the last several years, it has consistently turned a profit thanks to its journals and investments.
