Biologists seek clarity on research rules

Two groups of biologists have called on the US government to clarify and reconsider its decisions to restrict research on pathogens.

The Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology and the National Science Advisory Board for Biosecurity each agreed  statements asking the White House to clear up confusion about the rules and allow valuable research to proceed.

“I urge the US government to strengthen the institutional dual use research of concern policy to ensure consistency of oversight, enhance coordination with related rules and regulations, and institute robust and transparent policy evaluation,” wrote FASEB president Joseph Haywood.
