Members of the American Association for the Advancement of Science have elected 396 AAAS Fellows for 2017, in recognition of their contributions to science and technology, and scientific leadership, in a variety of disciplines.
The list of fellows includes: NASA scientist Wilton Sanders III for his contribution to astronomy; Chung-Jui Tsai, from the University of Georgia for biology; Dorothy Hosler, from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology for her anthropological research; and Karl O Christe, from the University of Southern California for chemistry.
The AAAS Fellows programme was established in 1874, since then members have awarded the title to disctinguished scientists including: astronomer Maria Mitchell, who discovered a comet; Thomas Edison for his invention of the light bulb; and James Watson, who together with Brisitsh scientist Francis Crick, helped discover the structure of DNA.
