The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation has announced that it will create a medical research institute focusing on diseases of the developing world.
According to the foundation, the center will emphasize moving new drugs, vaccines and medical devices out of research laboratories and on to the market. Malaria, tuberculosis and gastrointestinal diseases will be the initial targets.
The institute is likely to be located in Boston and Seattle. A press release indicated that Penny Heaton, director of vaccine development at the foundation, will be its leader.
