A strange dispute between a university, a hospital, a cancer research institute and its funder has ended with the institute’s director back in her job.
Mary Beckerle, a cancer researcher, has been chief executive and director of the Huntsman Cancer Institute in Salt Lake City since 2006. She is said to have learned she had been fired in an email from the president of the University of Utah, where the center is located, on 17 April.
The institute is a research hospital that began with a $100-million gift from Jon Huntsman, Sr, a local philanthropist who made his fortune in plastics. Huntsman is the father of Jon Huntsman, Jr, former governor of Utah and a candidate for the Republican presidential nomination in 2012.
