IBM backs out of petascale supercomputer deal

IBM has backed out of a contract with the University of Illinois (UI) to deliver a supercomputer capable of sustained performance of 1 petaflop on a range of real-world science and engineering applications.

The supercomputer, which was to be provided for the university’s National Center for Supercomputing Applications’ (NCSA) Blue Waters project, was expected to be one of the most powerful in the world.
