Chuck Vest dead at 72

Charles 'Chuck' Vest, former president of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and a key adviser to successive US governments, who also served as president of the National Academy of Engineering (NAE), has passed away from pancreatic cancer.

In a statement on 13 December, MIT described the 72-year-old Vest, who died on 12 December as a “tireless advocate for research and science,” and a “passionate supporter of diversity and openness”.

A mechanical engineer by training, Vest served as MIT’s 15th president from 1990 to 2004, and his tenure was the third longest in the university’s 152-year history. He also served as president of the NAE from 2007 until earlier this year.
