Ludwig founder donates $540m to US cancer centres

Ludwig Cancer Research, a philanthropic organization, has donated a total of $540 million to the six Ludwig Centers at universities across the United States, including Johns Hopkins University, Harvard University, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and Stanford University.

The gift, given on behalf of Ludwig Cancer Research’s founder Daniel K Ludwig, ranks among the largest-ever private philanthropic gifts to cancer research.

The unrestricted gift, announced on 6 January, adds to the endowments established in 2006 to create the Ludwig Centers at each institution. It brings the total Ludwig funding at these institutions to $900m. Ludwig’s global contribution to advancing cancer research is now $2.5 billion, according to the organization.
