$10m for ethics research on artificial intelligence

Carnegie Mellon University has received a $10-million donation to increase research into ethical issues posed by computer intelligence.

K&L Gates, a law firm in CMU’s hometown of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, said that the gift would fund two faculty positions: a junior professor and a senior professor. The donation will also pay for fellowships for doctoral students, although a university spokesman said that the details were still being worked out.

The donation also includes undergraduate scholarships and a prize for a graduating senior.
