A philanthropist is giving Cornell University $50 million to create more opportunities in engineering for women, African-Americans and other under-represented groups.
Robert Smith, an African-American engineering graduate from Cornell who runs an investment firm, said he had become increasingly concerned about the lack of diversity in engineering and technology fields and this motivated his endowment to the university.
The gift will endow the university’s school of chemical and biomolecular engineering, which will be renamed after him. Part of the endowment will fund scholarships and fellowships for minority students, with an emphasis on women and African-Americans.
