Duke gets funding to replace research vessel

Duke University has received an $11-million gift to build and operate a research ship.

The 21-meter catamaran will be able to operate up to 185 kilometers away from the shore and stay at sea for many days at a time, the university said in a statement on 20 July. The Grainger Family Descendants Fund donated $5m for building the vessel and contributed $6m towards the operating costs.

The boat will replace Duke’s former two research vessels, which have been out of service since 2013 and 2014. Another smaller boat is still in use, but is only capable of day trips.
