Democrats say changes to oversight of qualifications ‘will undermine quality’
The Trump administration has announced changes to accreditation rules for higher education aimed at reducing geographical disparities and costs for students, but the changes have been met with hostility from political opponents.
Under the new rules, announced on 31 October and due to take effect in July 2020, bodies such as professional and trade associations must only demonstrate “substantial compliance” with standards and policies to become accreditation agencies with powers for overseeing and endorsing the educational offerings of colleges and universities.
