Biden’s $39bn student debt relief programme kicks in

More than 800,000 borrowers expected to benefit from latest round of debt forgiveness

The US Department of Education is contacting more than 804,000 student loan borrowers to tell them that their debt is part of $39 billion that is being written off by president Joe Biden’s administration.

Students who have accumulated 20 or 25 years of qualifying months of ‘income-driven repayment’ will have their debt written off (forgiven) or capped, it was announced on 14 July.
