Republicans turn ire on Biden’s latest student loan moves

Senator criticises loan forgiveness scheme and separate initiative to reduce repayments for low earners

Republican lawmakers have attacked president Biden’s latest moves to cancel or reduce student loan repayments, saying the government is not tackling the underlying debt crisis.

Last month, the Department of Education announced that it would start notifying more than 800,000 borrowers that they would have a total of $39 billion in student loans discharged because they had been entitled to debt relief but did not get it previously due to administrative errors.
