Jobs Council backs wider university marketing powers

Faculty at US universities should be able to shop their discoveries to any technology transfer office, not just the one in which the research took place, President Obama’s Council on Jobs and Competition has recommended.

Although colleges and universities funded with federal dollars had produced breakthroughs in areas such as clean energy, biotechnology and nanotechnology that had spurred new industries and jobs, the council said potentially groundbreaking research that could fund market success too often “lingers” in academic labs.
