A list of the White House’s spending priorities for federal R&D has pointed to fears of international conflict and interference in United States academia.

In a letter to federal departments and agencies published by the White House on 30 August, the Trump administration set out its five budgetary priorities for R&D in the 2021 fiscal year: security; industry; energy and the environment; health and bioeconomic innovation; and commercial space activities.

The missive, which is sent annually ahead of agencies’ budget requests, was signed by Kelvin Droegemeier (pictured), director of the White House’s Office of Science and Technology Policy, and Russell Vought, acting director of the Office of Management and Budget.
