Lack of coordination among agencies could threaten US global leadership, says report

A new White House body is needed if the United States is to maintain leadership in the global ‘bioeconomy’ of life sciences-driven innovation, the country’s national academies have said.

The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine say that economic activity driven by research in biotechnology and the life sciences accounted for 5 per cent of US GDP in 2016, some $959 billion.
