Presidential order cuts off vital route for universities hiring international researchers
The United States research community has reacted with dismay to president Donald Trump’s pause on the issuing of foreign work visas commonly used by international scholars.
On 22 June Trump announced he was suspending all H-1B visas, which universities use to hire researchers for long-term positions, until the end of 2020. The presidential order said non-immigrant visa programmes posed an “unusual threat” to American workers during the Covid-19 pandemic.
