President’s first budget boasts 9 per cent boost for civilian R&D, the “biggest on record”

US president Joe Biden wants to spend $171 billion on R&D across the federal government in 2022—a nine per cent increase over the previous year.

In a message accompanying his first budget proposal, unveiled in full on 28 May after the previous release of partial plans, Biden said the “biggest increase in non-defense R&D spending on record” would “boost America’s innovative edge in markets where global leadership is up for grabs”.
