Citizen science cannot be a substitute for scientific rigour, Craig Hilton-Taylor, head of the IUCN Red List, the world’s largest conservation inventory, has said.
Hilton-Taylor made the comments in an article responding to a Biological Conservation journal study, which suggested that using citizen science data in bird conservation assessments could help with their accuracy.
Hilton-Taylor heads the International Union for Conservation of Nature’s Red List, the most comprehensive inventory of the global conservation status of biological species.
