Thailand to host Unesco astronomy centre

The UN’s science and education agency is to establish an astronomy training centre in Chiang Mai.

The International Training Centre in Astronomy will aim to support early-career researchers and students from South-east Asia, Africa and Latin America, Unesco said in a statement on 29 August. It will be hosted by the National Astronomical Research Institute of Thailand, a state-funded research body set up in 2004.

The training centre, which will be the first of its kind, will work closely with Unesco’s International Basic Sciences Program, which aims to promote cooperation in science education, the agency said.
