The region’s economy, human capacity and resources “could underpin a research network with global impact”

A team led by Jonathan Adams, director of the Institute for Scientific Information, has said that south-east Asian countries are “in an increasingly strong position to benefit from their own potential to grow through their national investments”.

The team looked at the research outputs of 14 countries in the region, comparing their papers, levels of international collaboration and research impact. The region has greatly improved its research output in recent decades: it contributes nearly 8 per cent of the world’s research papers now, up from less than 2 per cent in 2000.
