European clinical trial numbers lag as China climbs rankings

Pre-pandemic league tables of clinical trial numbers show United States’ dominance

China upped its clinical trial activity in recent years, while the United States remained far out in front and Europe stagnated, according to data collated by the Association of the British Pharmaceutical Industry.

While China and the United States are vying for the top spot in overall R&D spending, data published by the ABPI on 7 October showed that the US dominated in terms of the number of commercial clinical trials performed from 2012-18, easily leading the scoreboard for trial phases one, two and three.
