US to end Fulbright exchanges with China and Hong Kong

‘Incredibly dumb’ move decried by academics

Amid continuing deterioration of relations between China and the United States, the Trump administration has said it will “take steps to terminate the Fulbright exchange program with regard to China and Hong Kong”.

This will prevent future Fulbright exchanges between the countries, the White House said on 14 July. In the same executive order, president Donald Trump also moved to “suspend continued cooperation” between the US Geological Survey and China’s Institute of Space and Earth Information Science at the Chinese University of Hong Kong.
