Amazon deforestation doubles

A tool used to support Amazon surveillance, DETER—Real Time Deforestation Detection System, of the National Institute for Space Research (INPE)—has found that almost 268 sq km of protected rainforest were cut in Brazil in May, up from 110 sq km in May 2010.

The figures were announced in an INPE statement on 1 July.
