Tempting farmers to take up agricultural grants

Brazil is trying to persuade farmers to overcome their reluctance to apply for sustainable agricultural loans, Nature reports on 2 August.

The government’s Low-Carbon Agriculture (ABC) programme aims to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by funding low-interest loans for activities such as agroforestry, improving soil uptake of nitrogen and rehabilitating degraded pastures. It was launched in 2010 to contribute to the target of reducing national carbon emissions by 38 per cent by 2020.
