Colombia's national science department Colciencias has unveiled a programme that will provide research funding and competitive salaries to encourage Colombian scientists working abroad to return.
Time to Return, an initiative announced on 24 March, will provide funding for Colombians with PhDs to return to the country to help transform it into a knowledge economy. The budget for the programme is 17 billion Colombian pesos ($8.7m).
Average annual salaries of about $43,000 will be offered, and beneficiaries of the programme will also be exempt from tax. Colombia’s government will pay the relocation costs.
