Scientists oppose ‘leader elections’ at Brazilian universities

Brazilian lawmakers are discussing legislation that would enable universities and public institutions to elect their leaders.

The bill is being considered by the CCJ committee on constitution, justice and citizenship. This is the second stage, after which it would need to receive presidential approval.

The legislation would do away with the system in which university governing bodies interview prospective candidates and select vice-chancellors or rectors based on their qualifications. It was first approved by the CE committee on education, culture and sport.
