Chile rolls out free university tuition

Chile’s ministry of education has begun to identify about 185,000 students from lower-income households who will no longer be liable to pay tuition fees, following a change in higher education law.

On 22 December 2015 a bill was submitted to the national congress to grant free education to students in the poorest households and was approved the next day.

“We always believed that education is a right and the fact that we are moving ahead strongly in that direction fills us with joy,” said the country’s president Michelle Bachelet, after meeting students to discuss the change.
