More than 20 universities and science institutes are collaborating in a long-term research project to protect Brazilian soil.
The Brazilian national soil programme, PronaSolos, was launched on 5 December and will last 30 years, according to a statement published by the Brazilian Agricultural Research Corporation Embrapa.
The programme is worth 740 million Brazilian reais ($225m) for the first 10 years. Researchers will use the money to examine and document Brazilian soil types in an effort to conserve them. This is expected to yield a national soil information system and the resumption of the country’s soil surveying programme, Embrapa said.
