NDP proposes science watchdog for parliament

Canada needs an independent Parliamentary Science Officer to scrutinise government science policy and provide scientific advice, according to Kennedy Stewart, science and technology critic for the opposition New Democratic Party.

Stewart will introduce a private member’s bill in the House of Commons next week to create such a position, which would be similar to the Parliamentary Budget Officer, and modelled in part on the UK’s Parliamentary Office of Science and Technology.

“The PSO will improve the exchange of research and knowledge in parliament, and ensure that policy decisions are based on the best evidence,” Stewart said at the Canadian Science Policy Conference in Toronto on 21 November.
