Canada launches scholarship scheme to honour Mandela

Canada’s government has established a fund to provide graduate scholarships for early-career professionals working in the public sector in Africa.

The African Leaders of Tomorrow Scholarships Fund, announced on 11 December in memory of Nelson Mandela, will provide $5 million over five years to allow young African policymakers to pursue studies in Canada at the masters degree level or equivalent in the areas of public policy and public administration. The MasterCard Foundation, which supports education in Africa, will match the government’s contribution.

Candidates will be selected based on their undergraduate degree, relevant work experience, and the case they make for their proposed studies.
